Hiking Trails at Miami and Erie Canal Locks 18 - 22 N (wood)    [Next]

Signs of Ohio canal history along locks 18 - 22 N vary on the ease of access and degree of attractions.  After a mile round trip, the only significance of the modernized gate keeper's house of Lock 22 is that it sets back to the east of the south end of Clay Rd. next to the canal.  The center one-third of the house has an old style foundation below the vinyl siding. The pond was dug during canal construction.  Beyond the canal right of way is posted a "No Trespassing" sign.    

Lock 21 is roughly a three-fourths mile round trip north of  Landeck Rd.  Lock 21 has both metal anchors and wood visible. When prioritizing time on a single day trip, seeking remnants of wooden locks with nearer cross roads may be a consideration rather than locks 18-22.

Lock 19 N is under 100 feet south of Bloomlock Road, between Route 66 and Delphos Southworth Rd.  A number of timbers from the wooden lock construction are still visible within the canal water, which preserved the wood, avoiding exposure to oxygen.  Southworth Rd is slow paced compared to Route 66.  When the crops are off, the State of Ohio lock signs are visible with binoculars from Southworth Rd.
