As Deep Cut was constructed below the normal grade of the terrain, construction at Prairie Creek require vast amounts of clay soil to raise the canal above the landscape. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources 2000 dredging project brought this area of the canal back near it's original appearance.
During the original Miami and Erie Canal construction, standardized dimensions included:
Water level depth of 4 feet
Upper width of 40 feet
Bottom width of 26 feet
Towpath width 10 feet
Towpath and opposing berm 2 feet above water level 32The trek to Prairie Creek Aqueduct is roughly one mile round trip from Barber Werner Rd. east of State Route 66.
