In 2005 and early 2006, St. Marys rebuilt the banks and towpath of the Miami and Erie Canal towpath trail on the north side of the town out to US 33, where the trail goes through a tunnel as shown below.
St. Marys, previously known as Girty's Town, was swampy and subject to flooding. The expansion of transportation by rail allowed St. Marys to continue to grow after the canal era.
