St. Marys, Ohio Canal History at the Bulkhead Canal Lock  [Next]

This original stone feeder canal lock allowed communities on Grand Lake St. Marys, such as Celina, Ohio, access to the Miami and Erie Canal system. 

The guard or Bulkhead Lock leading onto the lake was one of the bigger locks on the Miami and Erie Canal.  This lock measures 120 feet long by 20 feet wide.48  Including branch canals, Miami and Erie Canal system once measured 301.49 miles with 105 locks.

When heading south on S.R. 364 from the Bulkhead Lock, on the second or third intersection, one can go east on Waesch - 110 Road to view the canal-era school house pictured below at the 66A intersection.
